One Leader’s Journey
Work had taken its toll. The weight piled on, health declined, anger erupted, and anxiety soared. Along with anxiety came drinking and binge eating, then the lack of sleep, irritation, and marital feuds. The flashbacks were scary. Emotional and physical pain became the norm.
-
Start
The pain was unmanageable and it was becoming nearly impossible to continue working in the field. Therapy hadn’t helped much. The medication wasn’t working.
It seemed that this was “just how life was” and the only option was to “power through” and deal with the pain….alone. -
Transformation
New information arrived.
New questions were asked.
“Could work be playing a bigger role?”
Yes, The emotional toll of leadership and on-the-job trauma exposure can cause all of that and more. Let’s fix it. -
Outcome
90% symptom-free. Healthy body, healthy mind, healthy work-life balance, and healthy relationships.
PTSD symptoms have subsided, allowing life to be lived, instead of just endured. A new world of opportunities opened up. Peace.
One Agency’s Transformation
Frontline workers were speaking out about their frustrations. Turnover rates were soaring, and some employees had committed crimes and even taken their own lives on the job. A culture of pessimism, fear, and burnout was taking root. All of this was happening just as major changes were looming. Even the most adaptable and proactive staff were struggling.
-
Start
Distrust, communication breakdown, resentment, quiet aggression, and frustration were growing.
An overall negative view towards work and agency was present throughout the ranks. -
Transformation
The Commissioner was looking for solutions and wiling to try a approach - one that protected staff from the “second-hand smoke” of trauma on the job.
Leaders were trained and staff support programs launched. -
Outcome
Trust was repaired, communication opened, mutual support was cultivated between peers and even gifted to the leaders themselves as staff realized that Commissioners and supervisors were “human too.” Tensions eased and the staff adapted to the new changes as a team.
Stop PTSD before it starts.
Protection and repair from high-stress positions.
One School’s Change
Crisis, change, and school expansion were happening simultaneously. Physical violence against teachers had escalated. Teachers no longer felt safe. Social workers’ offices were overrun, political events were driving conflict in the halls and the school was set to expand.
-
Start
Turnover was set to peak. Leadership was transitioning. Staff and students were unsure of what the future held. Post-pandemic, the community had lived through so much, yet more challenges were ahead.
The school was expanding, it’s student-body was growing, and newly arriving scholars required additional supports. -
Transformation
The Assistant Principal had a vision of how they could better support staff. One that tended to the staff’s existing mental health strain and prepared them for the changes ahead.
Year-round programming rolled out. Buy-in was high. -
Outcome
Racial tensions between staff dissolved. Staff stayed on board through the school transition. They identified their unique contributions and built a mission statement for their role in the expansion.
Relationships were repaired and participants reported a reduction in their own symptoms which allowed them to stay in their chosen career.
